AI has crossed an important threshold in tax and accounting.

The question is no longer whether professionals are using it.

They are.

Thomson Reuters reports that 86% of tax professionals using generative AI now integrate it into weekly workflows, while newer research shows 57% of tax and audit professionals use AI daily or multiple times a day.

But adoption creates a second question:

Can the work produced with AI be trusted, reviewed and defended?

That is where the conversation needs to move next.

A general-purpose AI tool can produce an impressive answer. But professional accounting work requires more than an impressive answer. It requires evidence, appropriate sources, professional judgment and accountability.

The practical framework is straightforward:

1. Control the workflow

Define where AI can be used, what information can enter it, and which tools are approved.

2. Build in human review

Don't make "someone checked it" the control. Define what the reviewer must actually verify.

3. Preserve evidence

For material workflows, retain enough information to reconstruct how the output was produced, reviewed and approved.

4. Monitor after launch

AI workflows don't exist in a static environment. Models, regulations, data and systems change.

5. Assign ownership

Someone needs to be accountable for the result—not just the technology.

The biggest mistake firms can make now is treating AI governance as something that happens after adoption.

Governance is part of adoption.

The firms that build this discipline early will be better positioned to scale AI without scaling the risk alongside it.

AI prepares. Professionals verify.
